Practice, Practice, Practice
One of the most important rules in performing magic is practice. Just about everyone knows the phrase “Practice Makes Perfect” well there is a lot to be said for this in magic as well.
Every magician slips up from time to time but you reduce the risk of making those dreaded slip ups by practicing your effects over and over again until you can do them with your eyes closed.
When you purchase a new magic effect the first thing most of us want to do is show it to someone. Its a natural thing to do but it is a big mistake.
Let’s say you just spent $50.00 for a new trick and right out of the box you start performing it and then your worst nightmare comes true. You make the big slip up and everyone in your audience sees how the trick is done. Don’t Let This Happen to You!
Resist temptation, read the instructions, and practice the effect until you have it down pat. This way you can better position yourself for many successful performances.

Close-Up Mats
Whenever you are performing Close-Up magic it’s a good idea to use a good quality close-up mat. A good mat provides you with a quiet, non slip service to work on as well as a professional look.
As an added bonus you can easily have items concealed under the mat for production at a later time during your routine. We recommend using a mat that provides a large enough workspace for most close-up routines. A mat that measures about 14x18 should be fine.

Cover Your Tracks!
Misdirection and deception are important steps in magic. From time to time you may have to go into a pocket to drop off something or pick something up.
Whenever you go into a pocket make sure you come out with something. People get very suspicious when you go into a pocket and come out with an empty hand. Try using one of these ideas during your next act.
Bring out a small magic wand, handkerchiefs or silks are always good. Some magicians place small amounts of glitter or confetti in the pocket to add to the effect. I like to keep a small magnifying glass in my pocket which you can use to add a little comedy into the routine while covering your tracks.
Remember, Never Make Fast Moves. Make sure all of your moves are well choreographed. Fast moves will always cause suspicion.
